Immigration, amnesties, and the shadow economy

This paper investigates the effects of immigration and amnesties on shadow economy. We make use an array Italian data original economy estimates for years 1996–2006, comprising a panel local-level aggregate statistical information, microlevel survey representative households. find robust positive relationship between presence immigrants unobserved economic activity at local level. Nevertheless, impact unofficial is relatively small in magnitude. also exploit discontinuity created by implementation 2002 amnesty, which increased stock documented migrants almost 50%. According to our results, policy only slightly weakens link extent activity.
